Health Services And Programs For Older People Living At Home
Many older people with limited health and energy can continue to live independently in their homes—provided the right kind of services and assistance are available.
According to the government, up to 40% of older people now in nursing homes don’t really need to be there. Many would still be at home if only homemaker/home health aide and transportation services could have been extended to them in time.
It is true that government resources and programs of all kinds have been sharply cut over the last few years, and services for older people weren’t spared. However, homemaker/home health aide services are increasingly being reimbursed by third party payers, such as Medicare and many private insurers.
The availability of health services and programs varies greatly from one locality to the next. Many communities contain a large but fragmented array of programs and agencies. If you live in such a community, your biggest problem will be to locate and coordinate the different kinds of services you may require. Other communities are sadly undeserved. Their residents have to depend more heavily on family, neighbors and church for assistance.
The best solution is to become as familiar as you can with existing resources in your own community. Putting together the right combination of services may make the difference between having to relocate and being able to stay put. Once you have entered this helping network, there should be assistance in fulfilling your requirements.
